<p><a href="https://arstechnica.com">Ars Technica</a> recounts the $6 million copyright scam by Prenda Law founder Jon Steele and co-defendant Paul Hansmeiser as blackmailing pornographic movie subscribers with charges and public embarrassment unless they paid a $3,000 fee.</p>
<p>The scam consisted of the duo uploading pornographic movies to popular file-sharing sites and then sued whoever downloaded the links. They posed as their own clients, insinuating they were the copyright owners. They issued a warrant to Internet service providers in order to obtain subscriber personal information, which they used to harass for settlement fees.</p>
<p>Both men have been disbarred and Hansmeier is still contesting the charges against him while Steele is working with the feds against Hansmeier.</p>
