The subject of a Marijuana farm in the northern province of Sakhon Nakhon came up in a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The Prime Minister quickly debunked the story saying the government had no plans to legalize Marijuana, even for medicinal purposes.

The only legislation that was related to the false story, was an announcement that the cultivation of hemp may be allowed in the country for medical purposes. There is a difference between the two substances. They are far from being allowed in the public’s hands but may be in the early research stages of pilot programs.

Thai Law Forum and Highland Network further discuss the possibility of Marijuana legalization in Thailand.

The Sakhon Nakhon Governner supported the PM’s statement that the rumors were false. When other government agencies were asked for a comment on the situation, both the National Farmers Council and Narcotics Suppression Bureau were in favor of Marijuana legalization. The Farmers Council being that it would create “new business opportunity” for the country’s farmers.

Medical tourism is a growing industry in Thailand. As a result of the sheer number of patients and facilities have noted a significant increase in medical malpractice cases in Thailand.
