Grindr CEO Scott Chen, replied to backlash about sharing users’ private data with other companies as standard “industry practice”. He also mentions that measures were taken to protect users’ privacy and that sharing the data with partners Apptimize and Localytics was merely to test the performance of the app.

Researchers have voiced their concern that sharing the private data such as HIV status and location can result in people being identified. Chen responded that both partner companies are under strict contractual and confidential terms to keep the information private and that Grindr would never sell that type of information to “third parties or advertisers”.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has spoken out against the app that Grindr needs to get its “act together to restore the confidentiality” of its users. A user has commented that the app has “betrayed the LGBT community”.
