During the first two weeks of July, Thai police charged 156 employers with violating the country’s migrant worker laws.

The increased crackdown comes in the wake of a move by the Thai government to document all migrant workers in the country by the end of June.

After the June 30th deadline, the Thai government formed 113 teams to inspect employers in a variety of sectors.

Around two-thirds of those charged were guilty of hiring workers without work permits or other proper work documentation or registration. If guilty, they’d face 10,000 to 100,000 baht fines for each employed undocumented migrant.

On top of punishing employers, the teams charged 687 migrants for engaging in work without a permit.

Animal cafés seem to be popping up all over the metropolitan city. Thai Law Forum visited a recently expanded dog café that moved from Lad Prao to downtown Ratchadapisek road due to its rapid success with tourists and locals.

However, this wasn’t any ordinary dog café, the Big Dog Café owned by Khun Bird and Khun Oui have imported large rare dog breeds such as the Airedele Terrier, Shiba Inu and what they refer to as their “superstar” Solo, an Alaskan malamute.

Reports from an undercover policeman in Pattaya tell of illegal gambling activities using the bar game “connect four”. The game is now banned due to its alleged connections with the “foreign mafia”. Another bar game on the Junta’s list of illegal activities is jenga.

The crackdown on gambling follows attempts to license a commonplace bar activity, darts and attempts to arrest bridge players last year in Pattaya. Authorities say that these type of activities put the tourist friendly image of Pattaya at stake and by removing these types of bar games would “ensure happiness was restored” to residents and tourists.

The government is planning to introduce and distribute new types of “wholesome” bar activities such as connect the dots pictures.

Thai animal advocacy group “A Call for Animal Rights” has launched a Facebook group that will help pair anyone wanting to paint murals of the recently poached Black Panther with walls of business owners willing to open up their properties.

The creation of the group comes in response to authorities painting over Black Panther murals that have gone up across the country on public walls. To make a more permanent statement that activists will not make it easy for Thai-Italian Development CEO, Premchai to walk free, business owners will lend artists their walls.

The legalization of marijuana is becoming a debatable topic in Thailand since rumors spread in early January that the Thai government had plans for medical marijuana farms up north.

Current legal issues are discussed in the Thailand Family Law Center by Thailand family lawyers.

Changes to the drug law spurred from the debate of whether Thailand’s drug laws were too harsh. Thailand currently has issues with prison overcrowding, the highest rate of female inmates for minor drug offenses and the 6^th largest prison population in the world.

The new drug laws were officially established on January 16^th, 2017. Under the new laws, penalties will be reduced for those caught with possession, import/export and production for sale. In terms of possession, those caught will no longer be automatically regarded with the intent to sell but rather “presumed” which, will give defense lawyers more of a role in court to defend their client.

The penalty for import/export of narcotics will be reduced from life imprisonment and a fine ranging from 1-5 million baht, to 10 years to life imprisonment and the same fine fee. Those caught with the intent to sell will have a sentence reduced from death to life and a fine of 1-5 million baht. However, the death sentence is still plausible.

The Japan Times included in a report earlier this month that Thailand has received the first export of fish from the scene of a nuclear and radioactive leak that occurred in Fukushima, Japan, 2011. Some of the Thai public are outraged and have turned to the internet to express their concern.

The Hague Convention on Child Abduction allows for claims by parents who have had their child abducted.

One person comments, if the only thing the “Fisheries Department will do is just check the certificate? There is no other responsibility here?” Thai authorities and government officials have responded to the backlash that the fish have been checked and comply with the low levels of radioactivity allowed by the Thai Food and Drug Administration.

In Thailand, it is illegal for imports to contain more than 100 Becquerel of iodine and 131 kg of combined concentrations of caesium.

On Monday, the Anti-Money Laundering Office, along with 36 of the main commercial Thai banks and financial institutions discussed tighter security measures for clients wanting to open future accounts.

The meeting follows 4,000 accounts under investigation for criminal activity. Among the security measures would include a more intense screening of the applicant, requiring several forms of identification, including a house registration. Bank staff will also be required to check that the applicant looks similar to the photo on the ID documentation.

Banks were also told to let the Local Administration Department download their programs for further identity verification.

Infraud, is the largest operating criminal network in existence. It operates as vending machine websites for cyber criminals to purchase and sell stolen credit card information, narcotics, weapons and other illegal items.
